TradeRate Part2: The Jan08 Trades

Here you have it folks; Part 2 of the series on rating the trades of Superdraft2007. The introductory post is here and Part 1 is here. I was hoping for a few more slanderous comments. Maybe this time...

Trade #6

Iffy agrees to trade Lecavalier to
Beer Leaguer for Alfredsson

Iffy always listens to Broker Bill. Buy Low / Sell High. At the time of the trade Vinny had 63 pts and Alfie had 59 pts. Here is how they ended the year alongside their 2008-09 salary:

  • Vinny (92 Pts / $7.166667M)

  • Alfie (89 Pts / $5.465397M)

Iffy didn't have to trade Vinny, but BL couldn't keep Alfie past the summer. I think BL didn't get anything else out of the deal because of that fact.

Vinny starts 2009-10 with the $10M per year contract until 2089 while Alfie is going to have to perform at $3.8M per year for another 3 years. One of these players will be very tradeable come next year's trade deadline.

At the time of the trade, I would say that Iffy had a very slight edge given the contract status of the two players. In hindsight, since the yearly points totals were nearly identical, I would have to award BL with 35 imaginary points and Iffy with 65.

Trade #7

Iffy agrees to trade Crosby and Carle to Homer for Zetterberg, Meszaros and Homer's pick in the upcoming free agent draft.

Buy Low / Sell High again for Broker Bill's disciple. Crosby had 63 pts and Zetterberg had 57 at the time of the trade. Crosby had a healthy contract extension under his belt at a cap hit of $8.7M per year and Zetterberg was locked in at $2.9M for the next year. The other players were basically throw-ins for holdover considerations. Iffy probably didn't deserve the FA draft pick, but who could blame him for trying to fleece a rookie GM?

Crosby worked his way into some ankle problems (don't say Iffy didn't try to warn his potential trading partners) finishing out the year with another 5 pts. Z posted a measley 35 additional pts to finish out the season. Iffy picked up a nice cheap non-top50 guy in Dustin Brown with the FA pick.

If someone argues about Iffy scoring 95 for this one, I'll be a bit surprised. Homer gets 5 for making it to the lottery!

Trade #8

Broker Bill trades P. Datsyuk (6.7 mil) and M. Bergeron (1.197 mil) to
Stadnicky for D. Heatley (5.5 mil) and D. Phaneuf (0.9424 mil)

At the time, this trade really baffled me. The facts as I know them:

  • Heatley was injured

  • Stadnicky was leading the draft

  • Broker Bill was somewhere in the bottom half of the draft

  • Datsyuk was locked up in April '07 to 7 years at $6.7M per

  • MA Bergeron sucked after he was traded from the real deal

  • Heatley was locked up in October '07 to 6 years at $7.5M per (but declining salary starting at $10M in 2008-09)

  • Phaneuf was putting up big points, but as a pending RFA and future face! of the franchise he was due a big raise.

  • Heatley, Phaneuf and Datsyuk had been held over for the start of the season

I really thought Stadnicky got let off the hook with this one. It never occurred to me that BB was thinking about mounting a run for the money. Anyways the end of the season facts were:

  • Datsyuk - 97 pts

  • Heatley - 82 pts

  • Phaneuf - 60 pts

  • Bergeron - 19 pts

  • Phaneuf contract extension on Feb 6, 2007 for $7.0, $6.5, $7.0, $6.5, $6.5, $5.5

  • Broker Bill made it to 2nd place (huge backside attack)

  • Stadnicky maintained 1st place

  • Broker Bill has got some expensive holdovers options now

  • Phaneuf and his new contract carried his team through a lengthy playoff run

I have to give a slight edge to Slippery Stadnicky for landing a nice holdover in Datsyuk without losing his grasp on the 1st place money. Really a win-win here, but Stadnicky gets 55 pts mostly because I like to hold a grudge!

Trade #9

To Creepy : Eric Staal, Olli Jokinen and FMJ's Free Agent Draft pick

To FMJ: Ilya Kovalchuk and Creepy's Free Agent pick

On the face of it, Creepy gets two top performers and an 8-position move-up in the FA draft.

The players finished off the year at 87 (Kovy), 82 (EStaal), 71 (OliJoke) points. Creepy put in Staal and Jokinen for Kovalchuk and Comrie. FMJ put in Kovalchuk and Rolston for Staal and Jokinen. Creepy picked up Morrow and FMJ picked up Jovo.

I think Creepy is the winner here. Creepy gets 75 pts for this one.

Trade #10

Quagmire has given up his free agent draft choice and next years 10th rounder to Creepy aka 'Trade-Happy Gilmore' for my next years 3rd Rounder.

This trade was a clear sign that Happy-Trade was going for it. That is a pretty big entry draft swing for a free agent pick-up. Advantage Quagmire.

Creepy transformed the FA pick into the Capital's Mike Green. Green had a nice season and just signed a nice extension for $5.25M for the next 4 years. It ain't Phaneuf money, but it it Phaneuf points! A nice holdover I think.

Until Quagmire picks up someone better than Green with his new 3rd rounder, I'm going to side with Creepy on this one. Creepy gets 55 pts.

Trade #11

Beer Leaguer Trades Statsny, Savard, Barker, Campoli, Cheechoo to the Outlaws For Prospal, Spezza, Whitney

Outlaws and Beer Leaguer swap picks in the upcoming draft (this Friday) and swap picks in next years draft, Outlaws second round pick for Beer Leaguer's fourth rounder.

Wow! Where to begin? Who hasn't received some variation of this email from Tim:

"Your team for my team? K? Post it."

So, BL trades quantity for quality and moves up in the FA draft and moves up in the Entry draft. Why did Outlaws agree to this again? If this is part of a grand scheme, Iffy is too dense to see it.

BL picked up Horcoff in the FA draft. Outlaws picked up Hudler.

Analysis complete. Beer Leaguer gets 90 pts.

Milfy Trades his pick at this evenings draft to Beer Leaguer for a swap in next years draft.

Beer-Leaguer's 9th rounder for Milfy's 10th rounder.

This is a nice FA draft tradition. BL parlayed the pick into Joff Lupul. (Tim - He's not in the orange and blue any more!) He's probably not a holdover, and he got run over by Hatcher prior to the FA draft. Did he even play after that?

Anyhow, I think the trade was a bit inconsequential. Let's call it a draw.

Beer-leaguer trades Beauchemin, Liles, and my third rounder from next years entry draft to

Creepy for Zubov and his fourth rounder from next years entry draft.

Beer Leaguer got rid of some underperforming crap. Creepy got rid of a good player with a minor foot injury (day to day with bruising). Quantity for Quality? Looks like K-Lo's Pronger trade.

Zubov's minor foot bruise finally got healed in time for the 2nd round of the playoffs. Tee hee! Dobber must have had the correct news on that story?

Creepy got a move up too?

Because hindsight is 20/20, Creepy gets almost all the points on this one. Lets say 90?

Although i am 'leading' in imaginary points i think the gap could be greater. The FA pickup for Green was pure genius; not only did Green lead all D-men for the last 30 games he will continue to do so next season leaving me with the top 2 d-men for 08-09. In a draft gives high value to points from the blue line these guys should keep me at top. As for the draft pick, i already have 3 picks in round 3, 4 would have been an unfair advantage.

Zubov is on the decline. Definite sell in any league. Most of his minutes will be taken over by youth in the new big-D, as Stanley cup contenders.

Ummm you lie.

and quietly shop him

and oh you dirty bastard!

OK. So maybe there is something to this Dobber guy. Tim - are you listening?

Nice job on the header. Not bad for a compu-nerd-o-geek.

Can you text in "Superdraft20xx" where you want it and we'll try to get rid of the standard text?
