TradeRate Part1: The 2007 Trades

This is the first substance post of the TradeRate2007 series. Introduction here.

I have decided to rate each trade from the post-season perspective and also give my impression from the time of the trade. Hindsight is 20/20 as we know.

Please feel free to put up your arguments or hissy-fits in the comments.

Trade #1
Broker Bill trades Greene(NJ) and Lombardi(CGY)
to Creepy for Semin(WAS)

At the time of the trade I thought it was pretty even. As I recall, BB had an absolute over-abundance of household name rookie defensemen and the Creepy One had just lost questionable pick Bobby Ryan to the AHL. Creepy was freeing up a forward roster spot by bringing in a rookie defenseman and Broker Bill was getting a blue chip prospect in Semin with a really low salary.

Just 5 days after the trade he signed a contract extension worth $9.2M over 2 years and ended up the year with just 42 pts in 63 games injury plagued season. I believe he was mostly on BBB (Broker Bill's Bench). I doubt any of the players in this deal will be holdovers. Plus BB lost local fan-boy fave Lombardi in the deal.

In hindsight, this was a win for the Creepy side. Out of a total 100 pts, Creepy gets 75 and BB gets 25.

Trade #2

Iffy has secured MILFy's draft pick in the November Free Agent Draft
MILFy has acquired an option to pick-up Dan Boyle any time up to the Superdraft trade deadline

Like a scene out of New Lightning Owner's Saw Series, Boyle had himself gimped by a falling skate just moments after the holdover declaration date. Iffy was attempting to get something for nothing here. Given that MILFy was headed down to Houston to watch BouncyBall and SpirallyBall, he had a very low chance of submitting a pick for the FA draft. It seemed like a fair trade at the time.

Iffy used MILFy's pick to pick up the great Steve Wagner who after a fiery start, spent the remainder of the season either in the press box or in the AHL. Boyle came back just before the trade deadline and MILFy exercised the option. In the off season, Boyle signed a massive $6.7M per year, contract with a no-trade-clause then promptly got traded to a real hockey team. He will likely be a holdover. With only 24 games, Wagner will be a rookie again.

Given that Iffy had to carry Boyle's salary until the trade deadline only to lose his services and that all he got in return was a deadbeat rookie defensement, this was a win for MILFy. Out of 100 pts, MILFy gets 70.

Trade #3
FMJ has offered to give me (MILFy) Horton in return for Lang.

MILFy realized that Lang was no longer a Wing and promptly dumped him. FMJ realized that it wasn't Tim Horton and promptly dumped him.

Lang was on a 2 year deal and on the downslope of his career, however was on a tear at the beginning of the season. Horton signed a 6 year $24M deal in the offseason before trade.

At the time of the trade, I thought it was a win for MILFy and I still do. Lang finished the season with 54 pts and Horton rounded it out with 62. MILFy gets 80 imaginary points out of 100.

Who would have predicted that MILFy would be leading this thing so far?

Trade #4

FMJ Trades Pronger and Cheechoo
to Beer Leaguer for Gaborik and Boucher.

Some say "Blockbuster". Some say "Straight to Video". What a magnificent gang of misfits in that group!

Question: What self respecting Oiler's fan would trade for CFP (Chris F*&%ing Pronger)?
Correct Answer: Not a single one.
Alternate Falmes Fan Answer: Hyuk. There ain't none. Hyuk. Hyuk.

At the time of the trade, it looked about even. All players appeared equally capable of having big years.

Pronger is a decent (*cough) defenseman with a bit of a stomping problem who finished the season with 43 pts in 72 GP. Cheechoo had yet another off year with 37 pts in 69 GP. Gaborik put up a healthy season with 83 pts in 77 GP. Boucher played 38 games and put together 14 pts.

I would say Boucher, Cheechoo, and to a lesser extent Pronger all disappointed while Gaborik exceeded expectations.

FMJ gets 80 points out of 100 for this one.

Trade #5

Broker Bill trades: A. Ovechkin (WAS) - salary $0.984 mil to
Quagmire for: E. Malkin (PIT) - salary $0.984 mil

Wow. As I've said before, that is a blockbuster. At the time these two players were about equal in the standings. However, Ovie was due for a new contract while the Incredible Malk still had another year on his entry level deal. Early advantage: BB.

One month after the trade Ovechkin's new contract was signed (just 13 years). At the end of the season Ovechkin & Malkin were 1-2 in the league, separated by only 6 pts. Is Quagmire kicking himself that he didn't go after Stastny? Hmmm. I doubt it.

Still, BB gets 90 pts out of 100 on this one.

I think you where a little hard on my trade with Creepy. Was Semin really any worse than Greene and Lombardi? All 3 players are crap.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

What I meant by it Bill was that he gained a lot more points from the trade (by getting his rookie d)
dropping his only rookie in forward Bobby Ryan who had been demoted to the AHL off the roster. In doing so he was able to put in a real forward and I think stay near 2nd place for longer! It's not just the players in the trade, but the ramifications for the team.

Thanks for reading!
