What Were They Thinking?

For those of you who don't have any other interesting hobbies:

I did a little bit of digging into how the salary cap allottment was spent in this year's edition of Superdraft and compared it against last year's edition in an attempt to build a compelling argument that my predicted placing are correct. (That way you can all concede and I can take the money and bet it all on RIM.)

Here is how everyone spent the money this year. I have used yellow and orange to signify the highs and lows in each category.

Starters have been defined as the highest paid players on your team that fit into the forward or defense categories. Rookies have been factored in as well, on the basis that if you have a rookie defenseman, he will be active before a forward rookie will be. A weakness of the comparison is that there are a few low-priced players who are probably starters, but not accounted properly herein. (see Crosby, Ovechkin, etc.)

What it means remains to be seen, but it is interesting. Iffy seems to have concentrated on getting high priced forwards on the ice. Sean has taken the opposite approach with high priced defensemen. Barry blew his wad on starters, and therefore doesn't have much for insurance. Tim is insured up beyond belief.

Here's what last year looked like:

The numbers are a bit skewed because of the rule change, with Brad having put all of his eggs in his starters and not worrying about carrying insurance. (Note that the rule change was specifically designed to drop Brad to 4th this year.) My initial conclusion was that Brad spent way more on defense this year than last year and that's why he fell down the standings in my prediction, but it really isn't true. The numbers and percentages are pretty similar.

By the time we are at Superdraft21xx, I'm sure I will have enough data to draw some real conclusions, but until that time we'll have to continue to watch hockey and pull these predictions out of our asses.

And yes Bill, my love of spreadsheets and statistics has no bounds!

Interesting indeed. You do asssume salary and skill are linked and so they should be. However some GM's are smarter that others as your earlier post has indicated. There are many unkown's like a player in a "contract year" and the "wang's world effect". All that is certain is that every Pen's fan is about to get a free BlackBerry. Sweet. Sorry Iffy you said you liked the oilers last year.

That Blackberry thing is an interesting marketing strategy. "If we give you a Blackberry, will you like us?" Kinda like how mom used to hang a steak around your neck so the dog would play with you!

I dont recall a dog, but I had a brother!

Here's a data chart that I would like to see:

Greg's Time Spent on Hockey Draft Shit vs. Greg's Time Spent on All Other Activities (including work, family time, personal hygiene, etc.)

How would you like the data presented? I was thinking that maybe a pie chart would do, although I may be able to present the data better on an x-y chart with each activity you mention plotted weekly with a different line.

Without looking at the data, I'd say that hockey draft and family time are running pretty close, while I just plain stink at the other two!

I appreciate the humour. I actually laughed out loud. And all this time, I thought you were dead.
